Throughout January I had the pleasure of running art workshops for a group of residents from Station Road Care Home. The art sessions, which took place in Capitol House in Enfield, aimed to explore a wide range of techniques and materials. Another tutor and I, combining our artistic skills, planned the activities leaving some room for flexibility. In the first session we spoke with the group about our plans and asked them for any ideas they might have. Every week we proposed a specific activity but allowed everyone to engage with it in a personal way. One of the ladies was a fan of Eastenders which became the subject of her creative works. Another participant was passionate about animals and created lions and bears in a range of mediums such as painting, collage and low relief. The LwA exhibition, on display in the room where we worked, also provided inspiration for the service users showing them how materials can be used in different ways. One lady was captivated by a picture of a collage which later became the focus of one of our activities.

During the sessions everyone was engaged in the making process. Most participants were capable and independent and our role as art tutor was to stimulate them with new ideas. Where necessary we worked one-to-one with the service users in order to better support their needs. The group especially enjoyed making artwork that they could take home and some pieces were specifically made as gifts for family and friends.

“This t-shirt is a birthday present for my friend” said one member of the group. “Can I show this to my Mum?” said another proudly.

I really enjoyed sharing this creative experience with the service users from Station Road Care Home and hope to work with them again soon.
