Jams are usually associated with music. But they can equally encompass other art forms. And so on an early spring evening LifewithArt hosted a music and art jam at their Kentish Town Charity Arts Centre.

Local groups from Camden Carers and Change Grow Live joined forces, with musicians providing the backdrop to spontaneous collaborations on the art desk. It was a rare opportunity for different community groups – let alone different art forms – to socialise with soft drinks and nibbles and enjoy their art.

There was a band comprised of guitars, vocals, keyboards and percussion, accompanied by music tutors JT and Robbie. The art materials included paints and pens, paper and card, glue and scissors, and was facilitated by tutor Flora. Each artwork was started by one participant and then –  between songs – handed around to their neighbour to be collaborated on. This is the heart of a jam – sharing the work, sharing the enjoyment.

Several participants noted how their pre-event anxiety quickly faded once they had started. This is the benefit of a ‘jam’ over ‘performance’  –  a less formal focus means we can relax into the space and the art rather than aiming for a defined outcome, which can understandably create stress.

The event was enjoyed by all!
