How do you take a 3D object and create the illusion of that solid object on a flat surface? This was the challenge facing the aspiring artists, from Torfaen Community Connectors, attending LifewithArt workshops at Gwent House, Cwmbran. Tutors Lucy and Alan led the group through a step-by-step process to create accurate still-life drawings.

The grid method breaks down complex compositions into manageable, simple shapes ensuring correct proportions and perspective are achieved. The first exercise was to mark the outline of the objects on the matching grid drawn on the paper. The aim was to draw and measure the proportions of the object sitting in the box without being distracted by any surrounding context. Once the outline was created, the class were asked to mark the lightest and darkest elements of the objects and to trust their outline was correct.

The following week the group attempted additional approaches to creating accurate still-life compositions. Initially, tin cans were the focus and the group used a pencil or their thumb to measure proportions using a one-eyed squint. Then the artists moved on to apples, using rulers to make precise measurements to create an accurately sized pencil sketch before adding water colour.

Finally, the group used the different methods they had learnt to create their own still-life pictures of apples and variously shaped pots. The participants produced a pencil sketch and then used carbon paper to transfer the drawing to water colour paper so that they could use paint to add colour.

” I wish we did this every day I really like coming here… Mind you I hate measuring” Julie

” I didn’t recognise it as my work, it was too good” Mandy
