Looking back over the summer it’s hard to believe we managed to squeeze so many activities into a few short months! LifewithArt kicked off the summer by opening a brand new charity arts centre in Newton Abbot. Sherborne House was the setting for a myriad of inspirational creative activities run by newly hired tutors Monica, Cara and Sara. Not forgetting Gallery Manager, Allison, who took charge of opening the exhibitions to the public and also assisted in a few workshops.
On Tuesdays we worked with #DoItForDeaks; this local charity was started after the tragic loss of Kyle Deakin last year. During a series of workshops, Kyle’s close family members, designed and produced a beautiful mosaic aimed at delivering the #DoItForDeaks message- to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental ill health and suicide and support those struggling with their mental health. We look forward to seeing the mosaic on display in Newton Abbot later this year.
Kingscare Wellbeing group enjoyed a crafty few weeks in Sherborne House creating gift boxes, concertina books and learning the art of book binding. Sara Hurley, LwA tutor and story teller, regaled the group with traditional tales which helped to stir their imaginations and promoted conversation.
I think the sessions were extremely well received as the participants got so much out of it. The quality of work was superb, the teachers were lovely, friendly and talented and the feedback has been very positive.
Fiona, Wellbeing Co-ordinator, Kingscare
One client, for example, didn’t know anyone at the start, as it was the first group she had been to in many years. She got so much out of the sessions; she met new friends, feels more connected to her community and it has kickstarted her old hobby of making cards that she hasn’t done in many years
On Fridays the Newton Abbot Activity cafe group explored the theme of ‘favourite places’. Through print making, silk painting, drawing, sewing and creative writing each client brought their favourite place to life. From Irish bogs, to gardens and the sea everyone had their own unique and vibrant special place that they shared with the group
